Leith Festival

June 11th to 20th 2010

Leith, Edinburgh’s charming port on the banks of the Firth of Forth, celebrates its Leith Festival each June with 10 days of fabulous events, activities and music. This year the Leith Festival will take place from June 11th to the 20th and will feature more than 150 events in over 50 venues. Everything from theatre, dance and performance to the visual arts, literature and poetry, film and sport, music, comedy and open door exhibitions can be found in this hustling and bustling part of Edinburgh during these days. The strands are varied, and so are the venues: car parks, church halls, theatres or pubs; you will find an event literally everywhere you go.

The Leith Festival is organized by the Leithers themselves and it was originally a community celebration, but now everyone from Edinburgh and beyond is welcome. Leith has blossomed in the recent years and this festival is just another example of how. But the roots of the celebration go back over 100 years to the Leith Pageant in 1907 when a parade was held to fundraise for a new hospital in the area. This became a festival later in the 1970s and since then it has expanded rapidly, now drawing audiences of over 30,000 in the last couple of years.

The full program of this year’s Leith Festival is still to be announced, but there will be more than 100 events of music, comedy, performance, theatre dance, visual dance, photography exhibitions, literature, sport events and much more to be able to choose from. Plus, there is the exciting Gala Day and Parade which kicks off the festival on the first Saturday, the 12th of June. The Gala Day Parade starts by Lochend Park and heads towards Leith Links, while a celebration full of music, dance and color makes the whole city part come alive.

The Leith Festival celebrates everything Leith and Edinburgh has to offer – their people, culture, heritage and diversity. This community arts festival come extensive crowd-drawing culture festival is an event you should not miss while staying in the beautiful city of Edinburgh!
